Using GoToMyPC for Support
Not only can GoToMyPC be used for remote support in the workplace, but also for supporting distant friends and family members. "I use GoToMyPC to assist my 74-year-old mother," reports one user. "I'll log on to her computer for some hands-on assistance while we talk over the telephone. I've been able to help her install software, download files and do other things she's not comfortable doing without some assistance. GoToMyPC has been a great help because I don't have to drive the 50 miles to her house to do it in person."

GoToMyPC lets you remotely access and control another computer from any Internet connection anywhere, easily and securely, without any configuration. It even works through firewalls.

Personal Support: If you have friends or family members who frequently need computer help, set up a GoToMyPC account now and then you'll be ready to download GoToMyPC on their PCs the next time you need to help them.

Professional Support: If you'd like to provide remote support to your customers, you have two options:

A Workplace Expert Shares Three Tips on Planning Your Home Office
This month we feature an article by workplace architect and designer Neal Zimmerman, the author of At Work At Home (Taunton Press, 2001). Visit www.atworkathome.com for home office planning and design tips.

Over the years, I've designed dozens of home workplaces and studied hundreds more. I've discovered that the best of them – no matter what – share three basic features. I use the acronym BOPS to remind my clients of the three essentials for well-designed home workplaces:

  • Good home workplaces help Balance home and work life.

When you work at home, regardless of your family situation, you'll be mixing your personal and family life with your business life. To successfully balance this mix, you'll have to create separations between home and work. In some cases, the boundaries may be physical, but in others, they may have to be negotiated, such as the amount of quiet time you will need. Even if you live alone, separation between work and living space is important – for personal or business visitors and for your own psychological well-being. Depending upon the available space, your family situation and the type of work you do, the separations and boundaries that help you to maintain work/life balance can take many different forms.

  • Good home workplaces are well Organized.

Working at home not only requires the blending of your work and home lives, but it also demands an even greater degree of organization because the workplace is often integrated with overall living space. The good news is that many of the new, smart hardware and software technologies (one of which is GoToMyPC!) can help you to become more organized and productive, yielding more time for work and for personal life.

A well-designed home workplace should also be as comfortable and health conducive as the traditional workplace, and can be even more so. You should become knowledgeable about workstations, chairs, keyboards and lighting options so that you can design your workplace to avoid eye fatigue, body strain and repetitive stress injuries. A great deal of information on this subject is available on the Internet. A search using the keyword ergonomics will provide you with a starting point.

  • Good home workplaces have a Personal Spirit.

A well-planned and well-designed home office should be more than merely a place to suffer through work! You'll be spending a lot of time there earning the money that pays for everything else, so your workplace should reflect the things in life that for you, are worth working for.

Whether you are doing it yourself or enlisting the help of an experienced workplace designer, think "out of the box" according to your own design tastes. Plan for places to display items that reflect your personal interests, such as art, mementos, collectibles, personal photos or anything else that is a reflection of your life and passions. You can and should create an environment that you feel good about, and one that's a personal reflection of you.

Try GoToMyPC and see how it can give you greater ability to work at home.

    Global Economy Impacts Work Hours
As anyone doing business internationally knows, communicating with colleagues and customers in different time zones can be a logistical nightmare. It's certainly not something that can be easily accomplished during normal working hours. And as standard hours become less common, balancing work and personal time becomes more difficult.

According to a Science article, "Toward a 24-Hour Economy" by Dr. Harriet Presser, "Technological change. . .has moved us to a 24-hour global economy. Two-fifths of all employed Americans work mostly during the evenings or nights, on rotating shifts, or on weekends" while less than a third of employed Americans work the standard Monday-through-Friday, 40-hour work week. This type of schedule can be stressful unless you plan carefully. Here are a couple ideas for rethinking work hours in the global economy:
    • Move toward a flexible work schedule: Plan your work schedule so that it still leaves personal time for you. For instance, if your job is better done during early morning hours, try to take some afternoons off.
    • Make sure you have the ability to work outside the office: GoToMyPC can help you leave on time and connect to your computer in the evenings or on weekends as necessary. James Dabney, a partner with the law firm Pennie & Edmonds LLP, explains that "GoToMyPC makes it possible for us to communicate with customers and clients who are overseas and are working different times than we do in the United States."

    Customer Profile: My Virtual Office
John E. Harding, J.D., is a lawyer with Harding & Associates in San Francisco.

As a busy trial lawyer, John Harding often finds himself needing to get work down while away from the office. Thanks to GoToMyPC, he says, that challenge has become less daunting: "Airports, hotels, courtrooms – if they have Internet access, they can now serve as my virtual office."

Harding has discovered that working from the road isn't the only time that remote computing is beneficial. "Everyone has those periods when there just aren't enough hours in the day," he says. "At one point, I was getting up at 4 A.M. to drive to the office and start pounding away at my computer. The busy times have not gone away, but the commute has because of GoToMyPC."

Now Harding's early mornings are spent at his home office, and if he needs to work nights or weekends, he can do it from his home computer. "My life is better, and my wife and kids get to see more of me," he says. "Thanks to the folks at GoToMyPC for providing an economical service that makes work life easier and home life better."

If you ever have to work after hours or when traveling, GoToMyPC can empower you to get work done anywhere. Set up GoToMyPC now and get your own virtual office.
